Have you heard of Somatic Healing?

When I was training to become a Craniosacral Therapist with Circle Cranio I had an 'aha' moment reading 'Waking the Tiger; Healing Trauma' by Peter Levine. The book just made so much sense. It's that moment when you are reading something and a whole string of thoughts/concepts come together and you realise they form a more coherent understanding.

Then last year I was fortunate to join a 'conversation' with Peter Levine through the Craniosacral Therapists Associations (CSTA). I really valued learning of how his personal trauma had led him to his healing trauma work and to his in-depth understanding about how trauma occurs, how it can be 'held', and how it can be discharged.

His work is widely used by psychologists and other mental health practitioners and is taken a step further by body workers such as Craniosacral Therapists. When working in CST this connection between the body and mind - the phyical processing of emotions and experiences (such as trauma) - is our field. In sessions it is not uncommon that in making physical contact with the fully clothed body that experiences/emotions such as trauma are touched upon. In the safety of the therapeutic relationship, in the hands of a skilled practitioner, and staying in the present moment it is not uncommon to experience a release of trauma related tension that was held in the body causing pain or other issues.

For Craniosacral Therapists this somatic approach means focusing awareness on bodily sensations and they they related to emotions and experiences. Somatic healing is widely thought to beneficial for improving Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and pain. It is able to calm the sympathetic nervous system by increasing parasympathetic activity, If you think such an approach to healing might to beneficial to you please give me a call to discuss if I might be able to help you with craniosacral therapy.
